History

1946 It all started when Henry and Rosemary Kowalski opened Uncle Ben’s Diner in San Antonio, a little beer and barbecue spot near St. Mary’s University. Rosemary sent the business in a new direction when she began catering private parties, making the deliveries in her 1953 Buick.

1968 By now, the business occupied eleven buildings on four city blocks. The expansion came just in time for HemisFair ’68, where Catering by Rosemary made a big splash, catering 105 of the 112 pavilion celebrations at the Fair.

1972 This year marks the official beginning of the long-standing relationship between Catering by Rosemary and The Ex Students Association.

1981 The company continued to grow so robustly that another move was necessary, this time to a 6-acre site in downtown San Antonio, where all the company’s subsidiaries — floral design, rental equipment, destination management, catering, corporate dining, and deli deliveries — came together under one roof.

1989 The Company name, Catering by Rosemary, didn’t communicate the broad array of services being offered, so the 45-year-old firm was re-christened “The RK Group.” The same year, founder Rosemary Kowalski turned leadership of the company over to her son, Greg, who continues the family tradition of quality, service, and innovation.

1990 Catering by Rosemary Austin begins managing the University of Texas Etter-Harbin Alumni Center, handling booking, event planning and catering of events. During football season the Alumni Center hosts 15,000 alums and guests per game, and annually serves over 500,000.

1997 Catering by Rosemary Austin is awarded the contract for the Capitol Building and opens the Capitol Grill.

2001 Catering by Rosemary Austin opens of The Story of Texas Café at the Bob Bullock Texas State History Museum and also wins another state contract as the preffered caterer for Museum special events.

2004 The Texpresso Café opens in the Etter-Harbin Alumni Center serving students, faculty, and the public year-round.
